Artist's Statement

My paintings are meant to elicit a wide range of responses – polemical, introspective and emotional.
I construct them in a provisional manner, as they are not products of predetermined strategy. It is only
through the process of making that the work’s thematic content is extracted and codified. It is a process
of give and take between the canvas and myself.

The world of figurative art – be it painting, sculpture, photography or cinema, presents a kind of
parallel reality that is often involving, but ultimately artificial. Whereas much abstraction, while having
a superior claim on the present world (or factualness) by simply asserting a prima facie objecthood,
is unable to utilize the richness of narrative and its attendant allusions. My work attempts to incorporate
the strengths of both the abstract and figurative, playing with allusion and material fact, one actively
informing the other.
